Draw your own "Languages of Love" Item Map with Winsteps or Facets

"The 5 Love Languages" is a series of books by Gary Chapman, describing how we communicate in intimate relationships. He identifies five "languages" (methods of communication). Each of us focuses on one or more of those languages. On his website - www.5lovelanguages.com - Gary Chapman provides a quiz of 30 questions each containing a pair of statements: one statement in one "language", and the other statement in a different "language". He asks you to chose the statement that is more meaningful to you in a relationship. From these paired comparisons, Winsteps or Facets uses Rasch analysis to construct a Wright item-map of your "Love Languages" latent variable.

    How to proceed:

  1. Go to www.5lovelanguages.com - Click on "Learn your Love Language" - Click on "DOWNLOAD THE PDF VERSION".
    Print the PDF. Answer the questions by circling the chosen letter in each pair of statements.

    Winsteps:

  2. Download this Excel file www.winsteps.com/a/languages.xls to your desktop.
    In each row (question), enter 1 in the column for the preferred statement (Column letter) and 0 in the column for the other statement (Column letter). There will be one 1 and one 0 in every row, and 12 numbers in each column.
    Then save the Excel file to your computer.

  3. Launch Winsteps or freeware Ministep www.winsteps.com/ministep.htm

  4. Click on "import from ..." or the Excel/RSSST menu.
    Click on Excel
    Click on "Select Excel file": choose the Excel file you have downloaded and edited

  5. In the Excel file, columns A-E are the Item Response Variables.
    Columns G-H are the Person Label Variables. Edit the dialog box to show this

  6. Click on "Construct Winsteps file"

  7. Insert these lines just before &END in the Winsteps control file.

    ; copy-and-paste these lines into your control file:
    PAIRED=Yes
    USCALE=-1
    PERSON= QUN
    ITEM= LANG
    TFILE=*
    12.2
    *

    My complete Winsteps control and data file is at www.winsteps.com/a/languages.txt

  8. Save the Winsteps control file and click on "Launch Winsteps"

  9. When Winsteps (or Ministep) completes, your own "Languages of Love" variable map will display. Your preferred love language is the language at the top!

  10. Here is Mike's "Languages of Love" item map

    Facets:

  11. Download this Facets specification-and-data file file www.winsteps.com/a/flanguages.txt to your desktop.
    Now read down the Questionnaire PDF. In each row under Data=, enter 1 (if the statement is circled) or 0 (if not) after the last comma ","
    There will be one 1 and one 0 for every pair of statements.
    Then save the Facets file to your computer's desktop.

  12. Drag the saved file onto your Facets shortcut. Facets will launch. Analyze the data.
    When the analysis completes, your Table 6 map will display. Your preferred language is at the top.
    Look at Table 7.2. Check that each language has a count of 12. If not, there is a problem in your data.
